Britain - a nation of animal lovers? It is estimated that every other household in the UK owns a pet, with around 20 million pets (excluding fish) owned across the country, among them eight and a half million dogs and eight million cats.

However, not all of us outlive all our pets, and every year thousands of people die without having let people around them know - whether by putting it in their will, or simply making it clear to a relative - what is to become of their beloved pets which can leave family.

Get your pet named in your will

Nominating family and friends in your will to look after your pet(s) is a good way to prepare (but make sure you ask them first!). You can’t ‘leave’ money to a pet, but you can leave the money to the people who’ve nominated to look after the pet.
If you want to add a specific bequest to an existing will, to fund a nominee to care for the pet after you’ve gone, you can add it as a ‘codicil’ amendment to the will. You can also add a ‘letter of wishes’, essentially a ‘handover note’ that details how to look after the pet, for example its likes, its habits, its diet, contact details for its vet and more.

Register with pet care charities

Registering with pet care charities or animal trusts on a ‘pre-need’ basis can give you peace of mind that your pet will be cared for. Make sure your family or the executor of the will know, so that after your death the charity can be contacted to start arranging to rehome your pet.

Choosing a pet charity for based on your needs
  • The RSPCA’s free Home for Life scheme takes a wide variety of household pets to the nearest RSPCA shelter to see if they can be rehomed, even together if possible.
  • Pets into Care from Blue Cross takes up to four small household animals into care until they are rehomed.
  • Cats Protection is another pre-registering organisation that looks after felines whose owners have died and allows you to leave a bequest to help your cat and other cats.
  • The Cinnamon Trust is a charity aimed at ensuring the elderly and infirm still have their companion animals, with volunteers helping pet owners in their old age, and also with long-term care for old pets whose owners have died.

What happens if you don’t make provisions for your pet?
Not all of us make a will of course, and people do sadly die unexpectedly without having made plans. Without a will or an agreement, it can put a lot of pressure on relatives who may not want the responsibility, and household pets can often get given away or even put down. That’s why it’s a good idea to plan ahead in your funeral planning for any pet you have.

Pet care cards
Carrying a Canine care card or an Emergency cat care card operates in a similar way to an organ donor card. It can help let the necessary services know you have a pet that needs to be looked after, if you fall ill or worse, and as they are linked to any wishes you’ve expressed they should help with rehoming a pet if need be.

Plan ahead for your funeral costs
Making sure that your pets are rehomed safely when you die is just one of the many things to consider. With a fixed, pre-paid funeral plan you can arrange all the funeral details in advance by paying instalments into a long-term plan with a funeral director. They will ensure it is invested into a trust fund or an insurance policy. It can provide peace of mind to make a difficult situation that bit easier when the time comes.
