In what is possibly the least surprising news of the day, pets have been found to improve our quality of life.

Researchers from the universities of Liverpool, Manchester and Southampton have been looking into how pets can contribute to long-term mental health management.

They’ve studied 17 international papers to determine the effect our furry friends can have on those of us with various psychological conditions.

And the overarching conclusion has been that pets can ‘provide benefits’ in those situations.

‘Our review suggests that pets provide benefits to those with mental health conditions,’ says lead study author, Dr Helen Brooks.

‘Further research is required to test the nature and extent of this relationship, incorporating outcomes that cover the range of roles and types of support pets confer in relation to mental health and the means by which these can be incorporated into the mainstay of support for people experiencing a mental health problem.’

While further research into the subject is still needed, most of us who have pets would probably say that they lifted our spirits.

You’ve only got to snuggle a dog or have a sweet, purring cat on your lap to feel a little more relaxed.Prior studies have linked pet ownership with stress reduction and a higher quality of life.

That’s no real surprise; having to look after some other living being – one which shows you physical affection every day – is therapeutic because you’re forced to take a break from being insular.

Humans are becoming increasingly disconnected thanks to social media and digital progress. Having a pet is like having a constant companion who wants nothing from you other than food and scratchies.
